QUESTIONABLE CHOICES: Robredo’s deafening silence in local politics amid vocal national endorsements

Former Vice President Leni Robredo’s 60th birthday coincided with her endorsement of Alyansa 2025 senatorial bets Manny Pacquiao and Benhur Abalos—describing Pacquiao as “kind and trustworthy” and lauding Abalos for his long-standing support for Naga City. The gesture, seen by some as a sign of unity, quickly became political flashpoints.

Critics pointed out her silence on the Villafuertes, the dominant political dynasty in Camarines Sur—her home turf and former battleground. For someone long associated with anti-dynasty and reformist politics, the omission raised eyebrows. The moment, meant to highlight support, has instead reignited questions about Robredo’s evolving political posture.

Why are people criticizing Robredo?

During her 60th birthday celebration, former vice president Leni Robredo endorsed Alyansa candidates Benhur Abalos and Manny Pacquiao.

Robredo endorsed Pacquiao, saying that the senatorial aspirant is ‘kind and trustworthy’ and calls Abalos a ‘long-time friend’ of Naga City, especially with his help during difficult times.

“Matagal na natin siyang kaibigan. Matagal na siyang tumutulong sa atin dito sa Naga. Tutulungan din natin siya,” as she welcomed Abalos.

Critics also argue that Robredo has also been silent regarding the numerous posts sought by the political dynasty of Villafuertes in Camarines Sur despite being known to be ‘Anti-Political Dynasties’ and her ex-campaign manager, Bong Rodriguez, challenging them.

The cost of Robredo’s silence over PH politics

Last 2022 national elections, Robredo was considered President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ‘s critic, serving as a vocal opposition leader of the Marcos administration.

However, after endorsing senatorial hopefuls from the Alyansa Admin Slate and being neutral with the Villafuerte clan, people started to question Robredo’s stance regarding Philippine politics.

Robredo has built a political image with clean and principled platforms, and endorsing such candidates and being silent on political dynasties undermines the consistency of the advocacy she is pushing for.

Understanding why Robredo has to be criticized

Robredo’s voice and endorsements matter, and believes this is the reason why many politicians and candidates seek her blessing.

She is a political heavyweight with a very influential authority, particularly to the younger generations of voters and Naga City residents, which was evident in the last presidential elections.

This begs the question if Robredo is siding with a particular party, especially with Vice President Sara Duterte also visiting Naga last September 2024 amidst the inquiries about the office of the vice president’s (OVP) confidential funds.
